We stayed close to home for this anniversary. About a 30 minute drive and Hello Virginia City, NV!
The crazy thing about living so close to a lot of amazing places is you never take time to be a tourist. You drive by or through or go for a festival but then you head by home never having a chance to really get a feel for what you have in your own backyard.
It all started with a conversation about what would you like to do for our anniversary this year? We were married in 2020…the YEAR of COVID 19 and we never took a honeymoon or even a trip to celebrate. We said, “We will wait until COVID is over.” As all of you know we are still dealing with COVID, however, things are opening back up with little to no restrictions…YAY!
I asked Dan if there was anything he wanted to do and he said, “I don’t know…I don’t thinks so because we are going to Hawaii in just a couple of weeks after our anniversary.” Well that left the door open for me to plan something I have been wanting to do for a long time…spend the night in Virginia City, after all it would be October with ghost walks and other spooky things.
All of the arrangements had been made and the much anticipated day was finally here! We hopped on the Harley for our beautiful ride to Virginia City not thinking anything about weather. After all we live in Nevada, it never rains…haha it did today! About half way there we were hit with a cloud burst, luckily it only lasted about 5 minutes and we did not get to wet.
We stayed right in the middle of town on the main street at the Tahoe House Hotel. What wonderful surprise this place is. Our room is called Dan DeQuille’s Library. Dan DeQuille was an author who wrote about Virginia City and the Comstock lode during the Gold-rush days. Dan DeQuille’s Library had a balcony overlooking the street below.
Before we headed to dinner we took a tour offered by the Virginia City Outlaws…Murder, Mystery, & History tour. Which was nothing less than amazing. The things we learned about the city where mind blowing…like the maze of tunnels under the entire city that were used by servants, immigrants, and lady’s of the evening because it was illegal for them to use the sidewalks and streets.
Just a short 5 minute walk up the street was Cafe Del Rio who served us delicious dinner. Cafe Del Rio as you might have guessed from the name is a Mexican restaurant but what you might not know is they are famous for their fried chicken! That’s right…Fried Chicken, gravy, mashed potatoes, and fresh veggies. Oh sooooo good. We will eat there again.
As our wonderful day came to a close we visited the quaint hotel bar for a nightcap and a toast to our second anniversary.
Sunrise and coffee on the balcony with some homemade local pastries was the perfect way to end our anniversary celebration.
